A dipstick survey conducted by Vacha Charitable Trust among adolescents living in 17 urban slums in Mumbai and Thane districts revealed that girls never wore undergarments or owned a toothbrush, couldn’t afford to keep their hair lice-free and used whatever was available while menstruating. Vacha devised a simple kit consisting of a toothbrush and toothpaste, a towel, 2 panties and one bottle of hair medication for keeping their hair lice-free and provided it every six months. Sanitary napkins are provided every month as part of their menstrual hygiene. Vacha’s regular sessions on menstrual hygiene and personal hygiene helps children understand and appreciate its importance. These are baby steps but have the power to yield huge results.
