Vacha community centres provides experiential learning to children living in slums. These centres are situated across 15 slums in Mumbai and Thane districts making it easily accessible to the children in the locality. Children in the age group of 10 to 20 visit Vacha centres three days in a week after school or college hours. Here they attend regular, free computer and English classes, read newspapers, magazines and books. They also attend workshops by experts on gender issues, accessing community resources, formulating projects including budgeting, skills required for teamwork and leadership and financial prowess, etc. The children are taken on field trips to municipality offices, police stations and banks to give them further exposure in dealing with necessities that may come up in the course of their adult lives. Seminars on stress management, sexuality, health and nutrition, rights and duties and civic responsibilities are also held regularly. Running each centre costs approximately Rs. 15,00,000/- for one centre per covering 80-100 girls and boys a year, each student cost 15000 for one year.
